Catherine Wells

I completed my PhD in English Literature at King's College London, focusing on modernist fiction and phenomenological criticism. For ten years, I have tutored literature, philosophy, and academic writing to students from GCSE to postgraduate level — and to a good number of adults who simply love books and want to read more deeply.

My expertise spans English literature from the Renaissance to the present, with particular strengths in modernism, postcolonial literature, and feminist criticism. In philosophy, I teach aesthetics, phenomenology, existentialism, and ethics. My interdisciplinary approach means my students develop the kind of sophisticated thinking that impresses examiners and employers alike.

What my students value most is my feedback on their writing. I treat every essay as a collaborative project: I identify structural weaknesses, suggest sharper arguments, and model the kind of precise academic prose that earns top marks. Many of my university students have told me that one session on essay structure with me was worth more than a term of lectures.
