Douglas MacIntyre

I spent sixteen years as a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Aberdeen before taking early retirement to focus on private tutoring. My research background is in physical chemistry and spectroscopy, and my PhD from the University of Edinburgh gave me a deep foundation in both chemistry and physics.

Over nineteen years of teaching, I have worked with students at every level from enthusiastic secondary pupils to doctoral researchers. I know the SQA Higher and Advanced Higher curricula inside out, and I also tutor A-level and university-level chemistry, physics, and mathematics.

My teaching philosophy is simple: understanding beats memorisation every time. I teach students to think like scientists - to question, to hypothesise, to analyse evidence, and to draw conclusions. This approach is more demanding than rote learning, but the results speak for themselves.

I am particularly effective with students who have high ambitions. I have helped students gain admission to Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and Imperial College, and I have prepared medical school applicants for BMAT and UCAT examinations. I set high standards because I know what my students are capable of achieving.
